Mutula takes office as Makueni’s second governor
The August 2022 inauguration opens a new chapter after nine years in the Senate.

Mutula Kilonzo Jr. was sworn in as Makueni County’s second governor at Unoa grounds in Wote on 25 August 2022. Lucy Mulili also took office as deputy governor at the ceremony, which was presided over by Justice Robert Limo.
The inauguration followed Mutula’s service as Makueni senator, beginning with a 2013 by-election after the death of his father, Mutula Kilonzo Sr. He went on to serve two Senate terms before his election as governor.
Family members, residents and public leaders attended the handover, including outgoing governor Kivutha Kibwana and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The occasion marked the transition from national legislative service to leading the county administration.
