The vision

Technology with a local purpose

Makueni’s economy is built through the work of farmers, traders, entrepreneurs and communities. The idea behind Makueni Currency is to explore how a shared digital asset could support those connections and make participation in the local economy more accessible.

A blockchain currency records transfers on a shared digital ledger. Wallets let participants hold and transfer tokens, while a smart contract defines the token’s rules. Its value to the county would come from useful services, community trust and willing participation.

The opportunities below are proposed uses to explore with the community. They depend on the final design, merchant acceptance, accessible support and the results of practical testing.

What it could mean for Makueni

More connections for local trade

Participating shops, market traders and cooperatives could explore digital payments with a shared transaction record. The practical test is whether it makes everyday trade simpler and affordable for both buyers and sellers.

Clearer records for community projects

Published project wallets could make contributions and transfers easier to follow. Pairing those records with receipts and progress reports would help residents understand how a community initiative uses its funds.

A connection with the diaspora

People with roots in Makueni could participate in local initiatives through compatible digital wallets. Useful access would depend on straightforward ways to enter and leave the system, clear fees and support for residents.

A place for young people to build

A local blockchain project could create opportunities to learn software development, digital bookkeeping and wallet support. Working with local businesses would give those skills a practical purpose in the county.

The planned foundation

Why Robinhood Chain?

An open network for building digital financial applications.

Read Robinhood’s network documentation

Compatible with Ethereum tools

Robinhood describes its network as an Ethereum-compatible Layer 2, built with Arbitrum technology. This gives developers access to established tools for creating and testing smart contracts.

Designed for efficient transfers

The network aims to make transactions faster and less costly than processing them directly on Ethereum. Actual costs for Makueni Currency would need to be measured in a pilot.

Room for a simpler wallet experience

Robinhood Chain supports account abstraction, which can let an application sponsor transaction fees. That could help simplify participation, if the project funds and implements it.

Network capabilities: Robinhood Chain documentation. The Makueni use cases are proposals; choosing this network does not establish a Robinhood partnership or a listing in its app.

A path from idea to implementation

A proposed sequence for building with the community. These are planning stages, with no confirmed launch dates or completed milestones.

  1. Shape the currency with the community

Consult residents, traders and cooperatives. Define the currency’s purpose, who would issue and manage it, supply rules, pricing or redemption arrangements, and the responsibilities of everyone involved.

  2. Build and test on Robinhood Chain

Develop the token contract and wallet experience, then test transfers using a test network. Publish the code, document administrative permissions and commission an independent security review before a live rollout.

  3. Run a small, voluntary pilot

Work with willing participants to test real needs. Provide training and assistance, establish the necessary permissions, and measure total costs, reliability and ease of use before expanding participation.

  4. Publish results and decide what comes next

Share pilot findings and community feedback. Any wider rollout should publish the verified contract address, operating rules and support channels, with clear reporting on performance and changes.

Project information

Public participation & leadership

Any initiative serving Makueni should make room for residents to understand its purpose, ask questions and help shape its use. Clear responsibilities and accessible public information would be essential to building that trust.

Endorsement confirmed

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has provided official confirmation of support for Makueni Currency through the Makueni County Government website channels.
